Trina’s Papa comes to America dreaming of owning a farm, but Mama says only a fool believes in dreams. A year later, Trina’s family is still living in a coal mining camp, no closer to Papa’s dream despite the hours of back-breaking work. Then Trina sees a strange fish and is reminded of an old story with a fish that grants wishes. But Trina soon finds she needs more magic than a simple wish to fulfill a dream as big as her Papa’s.
